Sunday, a few friends joined me for a birthday day-trip to Virginia wine country. Apparently, Virginia wine country is one of the top 10 wine travel destinations in the world. Who knew? But with over 200 wineries, you could definitely keep busy for a few days! Virginia wines tend to be on the sweet/fruity side, which works for me. We went to four wineries out in Rappahannock County: Little Washington Winery, Narmada Winery, Gray Ghost Vineyards, and Unicorn Winery. Each had its own unique twist, and was memorable in its own way. I would highly encourage anyone in the DC Metro area who wants to take a day trip out of the city to consider visiting some wineries, either these or some of the many others. Most also have food and winery tours, or allow you to bring your own food and have a picnic on the grounds. The tastings are reasonably priced, and you get to sample a number of the wineries offerings. The Little Washington Winery includes wines from small family vineyards that aren’t distributed widely. We headed back to the city (thanks to our designated driver!) loaded down with plenty of– ahem– liquid souvenirs…. which will most likely be consumed over the next few months. Overall it was a great day, and I look forward to doing it again sometime soon. We still have 200+ wineries to try!
